The Cuban researcher Yakdiel Rodríguez-Gallo Guerra has joined the MEMoRIAL team of Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg in order to conduct joint research activities with a focus on image processing methods for C-arm-based computed tomography. The aim is to investigate how modern filtering methods can be used to reduce metallic artifacts in the reconstructed tomographic images in order to improve the clinical diagnosis and therefore, the outcome for a patient.

The research visit, funded by a DAAD research grant, is a result of Professor Georg Rose’s visit to Cuba in 2017, where he saw the work of the University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas in this field and for which they were awarded with the prize of the Latin American Association of Medical Physics last year.

Professor Marlen Perez-Diaz, who is leading the project in Cuba, and Professor Ruben Orozco, an expert in image processing, will visit Magdeburg in January 2019. The objective is to foster the established relationship and to identify new projects for a continued cooperation with the Research Campus STIMULATE.

Being asked about his first impressions after arriving in Magdeburg, Yakdiel says: “Regarding the city, I am impressed by your culture. You have really beautiful places. The churches are masterful and besides that your lifestyle is very good. I really like this place. And speaking of the people, they are very kind and well educated. At the MEMoRIAL graduate school I have met very professional people who are extremely well prepared.“ Yakdiel will continue his research in Magdeburg until the end of January 2019 before he returns to Cuba and his family, which is, according to him, what he misses most about Cuba.
